MIKE Amesbury has held onto the Weaver Vale seat for Labour, in the face of an impending Conservative majority across the UK.

Mr Amesbury, who won his seat from Graham Evans in 2017, held off a challenge from Tory Adam Wordsworth – retaining his position after a bundle recount.

The result was declared shortly before 3.30am on Friday, not long after Jeremy Corbyn announced his intention to step down as Labour leader.

Despite an exit poll forecasting a 99 per cent chance of the Tories regaining Weaver Vale, Mr Amesbury was named winner with a majority of 562 – gaining 22,772 votes compared to Mr Wordsworth’s 22,210.
