WARRINGTON Borough Council is considering making alterations to the bridge over Sankey Way after vandals threw a brick at a car travelling underneath.

A vehicle was travelling westbound on the A57 when it was targeted by youths stood on the walkway linking the Peace Centre to Sankey Valley Park shortly after 5pm on Sunday, November 10.

Damage was caused to the roof of the car during the incident, with the affected driver having now set up a petition calling on the council to make changes in light of the incident.

Damage to the roof of the car

The motorist, who does not wish to be named, said: “Action is needed now – lives are in danger.

“Luckily the occupant was not injured as the brick hit the roof, but you can imagine the consequences of this hitting a windscreen.

“Innocent families use the route to take the kids to school, and normal everyday people just going about their everyday lives.

“It’s now in the council’s hands.

“Warrington Borough Council must take immediate action as they are the ones with the power to make the changes.”

And the council says it is working with Cheshire Police in order to deter louts.

A spokesman said: “This sort of behaviour is unacceptable and poses a real risk to drivers, and thankfully isn’t a frequent occurrence.

“This is normally a police matter, but where there are concerns over the volume of incidents like this we will liaise with them to try and find potential solutions to deter this type of dangerous behaviour.”

The attack came on an evening where there was a spate of vandalism throughout west Warrington.

Windows of cars and houses were smashed during the crime spree across Chapelford, Hood Manor, Westbrook and Old Hall, with bus stop also reportedly targeted.

A number of incidents were reported to police between 8.30pm and 10pm that night.

Meanwhile, the Peace Centre itself was also vandalised by three youths, who caused thousands of pounds worth of damage when they smashed a window shortly after 9.30pm.
