SCHOOLS from across Hartford have decorated St John's Church with over 1,000 handmade poppies to commemorate Remembrance Sunday.
The display was created by pupils from Kids Count Nursery, Cloughwood Academy and St Nicholas High School as well as classes from Hartford Manor, The Grange Hartford and St Wilfrid's primary schools.
Members of the congregation and visitors to the church’s Remembrance service took the time to look at the 1150 poppies and reflected on the individual lives that each poppy represents.
“The poppy display is a fitting way to reflect on the past while still looking towards the future,” said church member Teresa Nixon.
“Each poppy represents a child whose life, freedom and future has been enabled through the sacrifices that were made in the past.
“We are also grateful to pupils from Hartford Church of England High School who took part in our Remembrance Service by leading Bible readings, prayers and playing the Last Post at the War Memorial.
“The poppy display will remain in place for the next few weeks for anyone to see when the church is open."
St John’s Remembrance service was jointly organised by the church and Mr Pete Young, the Poppy Appeal Coordinator for the Hartford area.
The service was led by Rev Alec Ham and afterwards, school pupils helped to place a cross in the ground, with each one labelled with the name of one of the individuals detailed on the church's war memorial.
