CREATIVE youngsters have won a national award after building their own library made out of Lego.

Padgate Library’s Lego Club designed their ‘library of the future’ out of the toy bricks as part of a competition to mark the annual Libraries Week.

The eight-strong team’s futuristic model included a recording studio with soundproofed walls, an outdoor area for meditation and quiet reading, a theatre and exhibition space and a coffee shop.

And the group, set up by the Friends of Padgate Library, have won an award from the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals for their innovative build.

Friends group member Linda Riley said: “Winning the competition is recognition both of the friends group’s hard work and the success of the Lego Club.

“Their ideas included an out of hours robotic issue system, indoor play centre, information desk and electric charging points for cars.

“The programme of activities we already do and our future plans were instrumental in our ideas for the build.

“We feel we have a unique and innovative model, and are delighted to be winners of the competition.”

Creators won tickets to Legoland Windsor and £500 to donate to the library.

Wendy Molyneux, Livewire’s strategic library manager, added: “The Friends of Padgate Library work really hard in encouraging people to get involved in library events and activities.

“We are delighted they have been recognised for their innovation and imagination in creating their amazing Lego library of the future.

“What’s more, winning the competition provides the building blocks for future partnership working.”

The free Lego Club runs every Wednesday in the school holidays at the Insall Road library from 2.30pm to 4pm.
