DUKE Street venue The Newsroom has had a refurb and here is a first look inside.

When Jim Toohey took over the venue, his main principle was to have a bar that would be appealing to an older clientele and in his own words "somewhere that you can take your Mrs".

St Helens Star:

The bar was already set up by the previous owner, who had already instilled these principles into the bar, earning it a strong reputation and recognition by CAMRA and the Good Beer Guide.

Jim said: "It was always our intention to refurbish the bar at some point.

"After seven great years it was time to enhance what we already had, keep the tradition and the culture of what Jeanette had set up but come up with something that would take us well into another seven great years.

St Helens Star:

"We decided to close the bar for a week and a bit, brought in the expertise of TJM projects, a local company with a great reputation, and basically replaced everything that moved.

"A new bar, new floor, new lights, new furniture and new (and different) decor.

"The newspaper wallpaper unfortunately had to go, however is still fondly remembered by the locals in the bar.

"So the next part of the News Room history begins, Melissa will now head the team that will take it to its next level - however the culture still remains."
