A PRIMARY school in Lymm has managed to raise £31,000 to fund a new all-weather running track.

The large amount was raised by Cherry Tree Primary School's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) as part of an initiative encouraging children to make healthy choices and exercise.

Children, parents and members of the community turned out to open the 320m running track, complete with four different sections in the school house colours.

PTA chair Kerry Spink: "Parents were keen to help raise money for the track so children have the opportunity to run and exercise together throughout the school day.

"We have organised a number of events over the last year which have been enjoyed by children and parents alike."

Governor, Georgina Walker, who leads the school and Cherry Tree community running clubs said: "The all weather running track will allow not just our school children but our whole community to use the school field all year round.

"Our Friday morning community running club sees up to 30 parents and members of the community come together, with more than 100 completing the couch to 5K programme over the last two years, whilst our after school running club for the children is hugely popular.

"This new track will ensure we can run safely all year round without having to wade through huge muddy puddles."

Helen Graham, head teacher, added: "Importantly, the project also included installing an accessibility ramp so we can have safe access to the school field for all our pupils throughout the year.

"We also encourage children to make healthy food choices.

"All our children take part in maintaining and caring for the allotment and helping to harvest the produce which we make into jams.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to all our parents that have supported the PTA with fundraising and have sponsored a metre of our track.

"We are incredibly lucky to have such a supportive school community."
