MAJOR proposals for a £75 million motorway service station have been submitted.

Extra MSA Group has put forward an outline planning application for the facility at junction 11 of the M62 in Birchwood.

It comes following a public consultation over the scheme earlier this year.

If built, it would include a hotel, petrol station, parking facilities and service yard.

Extra MSA Group believes it will improve road safety for part of the motorway network.

The applicant says around 300 construction workers would be employed over the building phase, with 228 permanent full-time jobs expected to be created when the station opens.

It is also proposing a local employment agreement as part of the application to ensure firms and people in the area ‘benefit’ from the development.

Chief executive Andrew Long said: “We are delighted that these proposals are moving forward to the next stage, with our planning application having now been submitted.

“Extra has previously consulted with stakeholders and the community to where reasonably possible take all feedback into account.

“We are committed to this £75 million ‘inward’ investment for the Warrington region, which will improve road safety for this important section of the motorway network, as well as creating a significant number of jobs, along with a full range of other important economic, social and environmental benefits.

“Extra MSA Warrington will further endorse a new standard for motorway service areas in the UK.”
