IT has been another year of excellent GCSE results across Warrington with more than 70 per cent of students passing maths and English.

Now in their third year, the reformed GCSEs are graded using numbers rather than letters, with 9 being the top grade and 4 indicating a pass.

Warrington Borough Council said just under half of pupils achieved a strong pass across the borough, the equivalent of grades 9-5.

A vast majority of schools have also shown an increase in the percentage of pupils achieving high grades across eight different GCSE subjects.

Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Matt Smith, said: "I’d like to congratulate our young people on their fantastic achievements in this year’s GCSEs. "It’s more great news for education in Warrington, following last week’s excellent A-levels results.

"The improvements we have seen, yet again, in Warrington this year are down to the the hard work of students and the excellent teaching and support from schools staff.

"GCSEs provide the foundation for future success in further education, training and employment, improving career opportunities for our young people.

"These impressive results show that our schools continue to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to reach their full potential."
