LEEDS Town Hall, was once the venue of the very first Leeds Triennial Music Festival, attended by Queen Victoria in 1858. It became a celebrated and world-renowned event, running every three years until 1985. This September, Leeds Town Hall will once again be welcoming audiences to a choral festival - a modern day version of the historic original.
Voices Yorkshire, a Yorkshire-wide choral festival will hold its Grand Gala Concert on September 14 at Leeds Town Hall. The evening will feature five of Yorkshire’s finest choirs, including performances from the Dishforth Military Wives Choir, the hugely celebrated Leeds Male Voice Choir and the inspiration that is Paul Whittaker OBE’s Signing Choir.
Tim Knight, Choral Director and head of the team behind Voices Yorkshire said: “Leeds was once the place to be for choral music and the Leeds Triennial Music Festival was an important and revered concert on the world stage. It inspired special commissions from composers such as Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams. We wanted to put Yorkshire back on the choral stage once more and support, celebrate and showcase the amazing and diverse range of choirs we have across our region. The Gala Concert is going to be a fabulous evening of musical entertainment by some of Yorkshire’s most fabulous choirs.”
Following in the tradition set by the original festival, the concert at Leeds Town will also feature a specially commissioned piece of music by a Yorkshire composer and will be attended by The Lord Mayor of Leeds.
