ACTIVISTS gathered at the Golden Gates on Friday to demand action to tackle climate change.

The peaceful protest was organised by members from the newly formed Warrington Extinction Rebellion, who made their views clear with banners and placards.

These called on the government to take immediate action to prevent climate change and warned people that there is no Planet B to fall back on.

And the group say that they received a lot of attention from passing motorists, who tooting their horns and giving thumbs up signs in support.

Paul Sheeky, leader of Warrington Extinction Rebellion, said: “We decided to protest because we are running out of time.

“Most people just don’t understand the seriousness of the situation and that we need to act now.”

The protest was also joined by Lyndsay McAteer on behalf of Warrington & Halton Borough Green Party.

She added: “Climate issues have been marginalised for far too long.

Warrington Borough Council have declared a climate emergency, but have taken no concrete steps nor introduced any significant measures to make Warrington carbon neutral by 2030.

“There are now plans in place to destroy huge swathes of Green Belt in the Warrington area, which is completely contrary to what we need to be doing to deal with the climate emergency.”

Alan Storton, a Warrington resident who attended the protest said that the recent extreme weather events spurred him to make a stand and that he was concerned for his grandchildren.

Diane Porter, from Lymm, also felt compelled to get involved, adding: “The seriousness of climate change cannot be overstated and it affects us all.

“We would like the government to meet its climate change obligations transparently and to show leadership on this issue.”
