A BLIND Northwich dog and his self-appointed guide dog pal have landed themselves jobs testing out dog-friendly holiday cottages across the north west.

Amos, an 18-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier, was born blind with detached retinas and eyes that hadn’t fully formed, meaning the kindest thing for him was to have his eyes removed.

Shortly after Northwich woman Jess Martin brought Amos home as a puppy from the rescue centre he was born in, her border terrier Toby began instinctively helping him.

Northwich Guardian:

Nine-year-old Toby guides his little brother to his water bowl and stays close to him on walks. Toby’s now become very protective and will guide Amos through tough sections of path, body block him from obstacles and reassure him when there are scary things around.

Now, as a reward for the inseparable pair’s love for adventure despite the obvious challenges, UK cottage company Canine Cottages has hired Toby and Amos out of thousands of applicants to take on a dream job as ‘canine critics’.

Northwich Guardian:

As part of their prize, these four-legged ambassadors would be responsible for testing out and reviewing facilities in some of Canine Cottages’ holiday properties.

More than 50,000 dogs from across the UK applied for one of the ten regional roles.

The company were looking for dogs with character and an obvious love of fun and adventure, with a willing human who would be able to capture their experiences for the Canine Cottages website.

Northwich Guardian:

As canine critics, Toby and Amos will now enjoy one free cottage holiday, access to local dog-friendly days out and a selection of free products from top brands to review. In addition, they are profiled on the Canine Cottages website and will appear regularly across the company’s social media channels.

Jo Price, PR Manager at Canine Cottages, said: “We had no idea quite how many dogs are currently looking for employment and would have loved to have offered everyone who applied a job.

“The selection process was unbelievably tough, and the calibre of applicants was outstanding. However, Toby and Amos are two very special pups and we’re very proud they will be representing our brand for the next twelve months.”
