NORTHWICH MPs have dubbed Boris Johnson a ‘liar’ and the ‘man to deliver’ in polar opposite reactions to the former London Mayor being elected as the next Prime Minister.

Mr Johnson has been elected as the Conservative Party's new leader in a ballot of party members today, and will become the next Prime Minister of the UK from tomorrow.

He won 92,153 votes in the ballot, comfortably beating his rival Jeremy Hunt, who attracted 46,656 votes.

Northwich MPs have given some differing views on the announcement, with Tatton MP Esther McVey describing the result as ‘wonderful news’, while Labour’s Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury listed reasons why he believes the new leader is ‘simply not capable’.

Esther, who was dumped out of the leadership race at the first vote, said: “This is wonderful news and I congratulate Boris.

“It was a much-needed decisive victory that will enable our new Prime Minister to unite the country, deliver Brexit and shape a path to prosperity which every person can be part of. Let us all come together, proud of who we are and what we have to offer and know our greatest days lie ahead.

“I backed Boris in the campaign as I believe he will deliver on issues that are important to my constituents and the north. I have had many conversations with Boris in recent weeks about issues including infrastructure, policing and education and I have been clear he needs to act and deliver what matters to people.

“It is vital the north gets the attention it deserves so we can continue to grow our local economy and create more jobs and opportunities for everyone. He is passionate, as I am about infrastructure and local services and that money is not wasted on projects like HS2 and I will keep pushing for action to ensure the concerns of the Tatton constituency are heard as he takes up office.”

Mike Amesbury, who is the Shadow Minister for Employment, gave a contrasting view to that of his neighbouring MP, and said he will work hard to ‘hold the new Prime Minister to account’.

He said: “Boris Johnson’s gaffe-strewn tenure as foreign secretary has proven that he is simply not capable of holding high office, now he has the highest office in the land.

“This is a man who’s been sacked twice for lying and made racist and homophobic remarks in the past, a man who’s shown only an unswerving ability to put his interests before those of his colleagues, his party and the country.

“A man who was so dismissive of the fears of business over the potential consequences of Brexit is not the man industry is going to be able to rely on, a man who described the £250,000 salary for his newspaper column ‘side job’ while he worked as London mayor as ‘chicken feed’ is not someone the many of our fellow citizens living in poverty or using foodbanks will be able to expect empathy from.

“Myself and fellow Labour MPs will be working hard to hold the new Prime Minister to account.”
