A HUSBAND and wife team from Westbrook have overcame their latest running challenge by completing Ironman England together.

Livewire lifestyles advisor Paul Corless travelled to Bolton to participate in the race alongside his wife Cheryl, where they faced a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

And despite completing three previous Ironman challenges between them, it was the first time the Warrington Running Club members had finished one together.

“It was my third full Ironman and Cheryl’s second, but this one was the most challenging we have ever done as the bike ride was 9,000 feet of climbing uphill,” said Paul.

“She beat me convincingly in the swimming section, meaning it took me 20 miles to catch up on the bike and she ended up beating me by one second by the end.

“It was a great day overall and it really tests you mentally to keep working hard when it gets tough in the last few hours.”

Both finished the course in a time of 14 hours and 40 minutes, and Paul said their intense training in the build up helped them to perform so well.

“It is a tough challenge and it does take you out of your comfort zone, which is why we spent a lot of time preparing for it on the same course,” he continued.

“We had about 30 members of Warrington Running Club stood on one of the course corners cheering us on, which was great and gave us a real boost.”

The event follows their completion of the New York Marathon on their honeymoon last November, and they already have their sights on their next challenge.

“We love Florida and have signed up for the Disney Dopey Challenge in January,” Paul added.

“For that we have to run almost 50 miles in four days around the Disney parks, so we’re really looking forward to that.”
