FOLLOWING a service held at St John the Baptist’s Church in Flookburgh, in the presence of Lord and Lady Cavendish, to celebrate the official handing over of responsibility as ‘Queen’s Guide to the Sands’ from Mr Cedric Robinson MBE the newly appointed, ‘Queen’s Guide, Mr Michael Wilson guided the children, families, staff and govenors of Flookburgh Church of England Primary School across the sands from Sandgate Shore to Chapel Island.
Flookburgh is Mr Wilson’s home and Flookburgh School is the school he attended as a child.
Mr Wilson and Headteacher Gill Pett thought that to celebrate his appointment as Queen’s Guide to the Sands, there could be no better fitting thing to do but to guide his old school across the bay where he fishes.
As part of the occasion, Tony McClure, another local fisherman of Flookburgh and Michael Troughton took time to aid the walk by taking their tractors and trailers to enable the youngest children to cross the channels and, on the way back, splash and have fun in the water together.
