A BAR with a 2am licence could be opened in the new Bridge Street project.

The council wants to add a 'drinking establishment' option to one of the units in the leisure block in the Time Square development which is due to open next year.

Cineworld and The Botanist are so far confirmed to occupy space.

But plans to be discussed in the Town Hall on Wednesday would allow a licensed drinking premises to open as well.

The document says: "The introduction of drinking establishment use would add to the new hub of night time economic activity in the town centre, as envisaged by the Council’s regeneration program.

"The addition of licensed drinking premises would add to the capacity of the town centre to host nights out in a location which is well

located in terms of transport interchanges, and in terms of the ability to police and monitor large numbers of people visiting the town centre’s new range of evening entertainment venues.

"The additional drinking establishment floorspace would complement restaurant uses elsewhere in the same building

complex, and would be attractive to operators to whom vibrancy and a high footfall is important."

Police say a 2am closing time for the drinking establishment would be allowed in one unit – with a 1am closing time in the remainder of the leisure block would be acceptable.

The document says: "This advice reflects detailed discussions between the police and the intended occupier of Unit 1, and the particular joint approach to managing the impact of this later opening time."

The application will be discussed in Wednesday's development management committee and has been recommended for approval.
