Warrington Wolves Legends XIII 36

THE Wire coaching quartet of Steve Price, Andrew Henderson, Lee Briers and Ade Gardner were at the heart of a Warrington Wolves Legends victory over Woolston Rovers on Saturday in the ‘Rugby for Roccos’ charity game.

Top-dog Price used all of his powers of deception to help put the Legends back in contention, while ex-St Helens flyer Gardner scored his team's opening try, but it was record Wire points scorer Briers and former Castleford and Sheffield hooker Henderson who crossed late on to nail a win that also featured a hat-trick of tries from Alan Reddecliff, who made his one Wolves appearance in 2001.

Another of Wire's current coaching set-up Kylie Leuluai took part, along with past heroes like Chris Bridge, Toa Kohe-Love, Adrian Morley, Paul Wood, Mark Forster, Ben Harrison, Gary Chambers, Chris Rudd and Mike Wainwright.

Price, 41, revelled in the spirit of the occasion, and scored his try with a move that would gain approval from members of the water carriers union throughout the game.

The crafty former St George Dragons and Balmain Tigers stand-off or loose-forward, whose playing career was cut short by knee injuries, was running on with the water when he spotted his chance to strike.

He suddenly threw the bottles to the ground and linked into the line before managing to twist in the tackle to score in the left corner, with ex-Super League referee Karl Kirkpatrick - fresh from his visit to the opticians - pointing to the spot for what he considered a perfectly good try.

Briers added his second touchline conversion, to add to a two-pointer Price had booted, to level the scores at 18-18.

Rovers, who scored first-half tries through Justin Becker, Callum Moore and Ben Dixon to lead 18-6 at the break, still had plenty of fight left in them though.

They went back ahead when Harry Files forced his way over and Alex Dunne converted.

But the second and third tries from Reddecliff put the Legends in front for the first time.

Briers added another off a pass from Bridge and the Legends made sure of the win in the final minute when Henderson made a fine break from the halfway line and rounded the cover to score a superb solo try.

A bumper crowd at Monks Sports Club was royally entertained.
