A TRADITIONAL fish and chip shop has been given the green light by Warrington Council in a historic Lymm store.

The property on The Cross, which dates back to the 1760s, was formerly home to Jones Family Butchers and ceased trading as a charity shop for St Rocco’s Hospice in January 2018.

But the new owners say they want to recapture the heritage of Lymm’s chippy’s by opening a 'go-to' store in the heart of the village.

According to their Heritage Statement published on the council’s planning website, the owners propose to recapture ‘the history of the chippy in Lymm’ through decorative tiling.

They say: “The general consensus was that a traditional fish and chip shop would work and prove popular in the village.

“The last traditional fish and chip shop in Lymm closed in 2001 and was viewed by many of the locals to be a ‘go-to place’ for your chippy tea.

“Our view is that we can bring to the village a fish and chip shop which offers a healthy option if consumed reasonably, which will be cooked in healthy oils high in omega and low in saturated fats.”

The development will also create three full time and four part time jobs, while a new two-storey rear extension will accommodate living space.

A number of objections were submitted to the proposals, including concerns over parking, traffic congestion and therefore potential dangers for pedestrians.

Others raised worries about litter that would be generated by the chip shop and argued that a variety of other takeaways are available in the village.
