WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is supporting a campaign looking to reform Pension Credit for older people.

The quest for change is being championed by Independent Age, who are calling on the Government to ensure more money is reaching the pockets of the elderly.

This comes as up to 1.3 million pensioner households, 40% of those eligible, are missing out on over £4.6 million worth of Pension Credit despite being entitled to it.

“The ‘Credit Where it’s Due’ campaign is calling on the Government to make sure that everyone who is entitled to Pension Credit receives it,” said the MP.

“Currently in my constituency, over £4.6 million of Pension Credit is not reaching older people each year.

“Pension Credit can transform lives, allowing people to live with dignity and independence.

“It can make the weekly shop affordable, help pay essential bills or enable people to take part in social activities, reducing the risk of loneliness and poor mental and physical health.

Ms Jones also added: “The Government has failed in the past ten years to increase take-up for Pension Credit beyond 63%, but they could start by simplifying the application process.

“If the campaign’s targets are met those eligible would be, on average, £49 a week better off.”
