FAMILIES enjoyed beaming sunshine at a community celebration of the new play facilities at Saxons Lane on Saturday.
Cheshire West and Chester Council, which oversaw the refurbishment works, organised the community picnic to showcase the new facilities.
Work over the past two years has included new play areas for toddlers, infants and children, as well as a multi-use games area (MUGA), pumptrack, jogging path, path connections, landscaping and playing pitch improvements.
Partners such as Brio Leisure, Active Cheshire, Cheshire Police, Northwich Town Council, the Weaver Vale Greenbank Hub and the Northwich Skate Park Campaign were present on Saturday, between 1pm and 3pm, to join the fun.
Council officers were also on hand to discuss future litter pick events, and to set the ball rolling on a ‘Friends’ group for the new-look play area.
CWAC leader Cllr Louise Gittins, responsible for green spaces, said: “I am really pleased that the Saxons Lane project is now complete.
“This has been a significant programme of investment delivered by the council and its partners and the community now has a wonderful new play area, multi-use games area, skate area, playing pitch, additional footpaths and landscaping.

“I would like to pass on my thanks to all of the project partners and funders who have made this initiative a reality. I am sure this new facility will make a huge difference to the lives of people living in the area.
“I also welcome the establishment of the Friends Group which will be a key element to sustain community involvement with this wonderful facility.”

The whole project has been a significant partnership initiative bringing in funding from the council together with funding support from the WREN FCC Communities Foundation, the Veolia Environmental Trust, Sport England’s Community Asset Fund, Local Ward Members for Greenbank and Winnington & Castle, Northwich Town Council, Weaver Vale Housing Trust, and Tesco Bags of Help.
Children from Hartford High School and Charles Darwin Community Primary School got involved by providing their ideas on how the park could be improved.
