A Yellow Weather Warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office for the whole of the Scottish Borders.
Heavy and at times thundery rain storms are forecast throughout Monday.
And in some locations 25 to 50mm may fall within a 12 to 18 hour period, with peaks in excess of 100mm over higher ground.
A spokesman for Scottish Borders Council said: "It is still uncertain where the heaviest rainfall may occur and the probability of such weather conditions is currently rated as ‘unlikely’.
"However, should it occur the impact would be high.
"If extremely heavy rain were to occur in a short space of time in a single location, there is potential for sudden and severe surface water flooding."
