PLANS have been approved for a new pet hospice and crematorium on the site of a former sewage works in Lymm.

The disused land off Reddish Lane will also include geriatric kennel facilities so that an experienced veterinary surgeon can give immediate one-to-one care to animals.

A treatment centre, funeral home and meditation space will complete the facility, which will include 16 parking spaces.

Three full-time jobs will be created by the development.

Home hospice and palliative care, which will be provided by the facility, is a new branch of veterinary medicine gathering momentum in the US.

It is currently only represented formally by three other veterinary surgeons in the UK.

The proposed Lymm site will follow on from this terminal care with private cremation and memorialisation which, at the moment, is not done anywhere in the UK by the attending veterinary surgeon.

Objections for the development were raised by residents, who highlighted safety concerns for cyclists and pedestrians who use the adjacent Trans Pennine Way.

Other issues they highlighted concerned the measures in place to eliminate smoke and odour from the crematorium and noise abatement over the short distance between the kennels and nearby houses.
