PLANK walkers will again step up and compete at this year’s Goostrey Rose Day on Saturday, June 29.

Teams of four from across the village are practicing to race around a fun course on specially-designed planks.

The annual Goostrey Rose Day, the largest village event of its kind in the area, will see 12-year-old Casey Wakefield being crowned Rose Queen.

Casey, who is following in the footsteps of her great aunt, who was crowned during the Second World War, will have two attendants – Amelia Hunt-Mason and Lilianna Hamer.

This year’s Rose Day president will be Lyndsey, who is well known as a teacher at Goostrey School and who has helped to develop the strong links between the village and the Elizabethfontein School in South Africa.

More than 200 children will take part in the procession from Booth Bed Lane to the school field which will start at 1pm. The crowning ceremony will begin at 2pm.

Chairman of the Rose Day committee, Christina Burgess said: "Rose Day, which dates back well over 100 years, is a very special occasion for the village of Goostrey, and so we are delighted that, yet again, so many children and young people want to be involved.

“The plank walking racing was a great success last year, and so we have decided to repeat it again. I am sure it will be fun for those taking part and will certainly entertain the crowds.”
