AN Appleton granddad is planning to recreate a famous James Bond stunt to raise money for charity.

Daredevil Malcolm Graham will throw himself off the Verzasca Dam in Switzerland in the same way that 007 did in the opening scene of Goldeneye.

The daring feat will take place on July 12, with the 72-year-old aiming to raise £20,000 for the children and young people’s charity Derian House.

And although already raising £15,000 towards his target, the jump is so scary that he requires his doctor’s permission beforehand.

Malcolm said: “It’s seven seconds of fun ... if it’s eight you know you’re in trouble!

“I was first drawn to the idea after hearing about the excellent work Derian do when I attended a charity golf day

“I thought if I’m going to do something then I might as well do it properly, which is why I picked Verzasca Dam as it’s one of the best stunts ever.

“The James Bond angle gave it some more interest, but of course Pierce Brosnan had a stuntman.”

Warrington Guardian:

Malcolm, who has run the family-owned Brick Store in Wigan for nearly 30 years, claims he isn’t an adrenalin junkie despite also performing a bungee jump over a pub car park 10 years ago.

And he added that he is not nervous for the event and cannot wait to take on the 700ft jump, which is more than one-and-a-half times the height of Blackpool Tower.

His wife Ange will also make the trip to Switzerland to support him and the pair are planning to enjoy a four-day break afterwards to recover.

Kevin Bedford, fundraising manager at Derian House, said: “Our fantastic supporters do some weird and wonderful things to raise money for our children here at Derian House, but I have to say this is a first.

“We can’t wait to hear how Malcolm gets on with this awe-inspiring challenge and we sincerely thank him for making a real difference to the lives of our families.”
