A VAN driver has been fined after being spotted by motorway police officers 'veering in the carriageway' while trying to select a song off his phone.

The motorist was spotted on the M6 near Holmes Chapel yesterday, Sunday, and was pulled over by officers.

It’s illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving and can result in six penalty points and a £200 fine or even losing your licence if you passed your driving test in the past two years.

Drivers who don't have 'proper control of the vehicle' can get three penalty points.

In a post on Facebook, NW Motorway Police asked their fans on the social media site to 'suggest the song he was trying to find'.

Hundreds of people got involved suggesting tracks with some of the more popular including:

  • I Fought The Law (and the law won) - The Clash
  • These Boots Are Made for Walking - Nancy Sinatra
  • Stop - Spice Girls
  • Good Morning Judge - 10cc
  • Driven To Tears by The Police

While others suggested any track from The Drifters would be appropriate.

The post was criticised by some for 'making light' of a potentially serious situation but many others added the post had done its job and helped to raise awareness around using your phone at the wheel.
