WARRINGTON Walking Day 2019 takes place on Friday so here's everything you need to know about dates, road closures and procession times.
This year’s Warrington Walking Day takes place on Friday, June 28, and will see hundreds of schoolchildren and church parishioners take to the streets in the town centre in one of the town’s oldest and dearest traditions.
When do the road closures start?
Road closures will be in place in the town centre and beyond between 7.30am and 1pm in order to allow the parade safe passage through Warrington – as well as helping churches and schools to make their way to Bank Park for the beginning of the procession.
And while Warrington Borough Council says that ‘additional challenges’ have been presented by redevelopment works in the town centre, arrangements have been put in place to allow the parade to follow its usual route.
Road closures will begin at 7.30am, when Sankey Street is shut between Crosfield Street and Leigh – while Winmarleigh Street will be blocked between Sankey Street and Museum Street from the same time.
At 8am, all other remaining streets in the town centre will close – other than Buttermarket Street, Dial Street and Academy Street.
These three streets will then close from 9am – as will Bridge Foot, Church Street and Knutsford Road outbound between Grange Avenue and the town centre.
From 9.30am, Orford Lane, Midland Way, Legh Street, Tanners Lane, Pinners Brow, Bath Street and Rhodes Street will shut.
And Liverpool Road and Milner Street will be closed from 10am.
Access to the Market Car Park and DW Sports will be allowed throughout the morning, with Academy Way remaining open – although it will shut for a short time to allow the parade to pass through.
The procession will begin at roughly 10.30am.
A Warrington Borough Council spokesman said: “Warrington Borough Council is asking everyone to play their part in the safe and smooth running of Walking Day 2019 – organisers are gearing up for what is always one of the most popular, vibrant and exciting days in Warrington’s calendar.
“This year’s event has presented some additional challenges, due to the ongoing regeneration work taking place in the town centre.
“However, the council has worked hard to put arrangements in place – including phased road closures – so that the traditional route can be maintained.
“The inner town centre will be closed to traffic from 7.30am until around 1pm and vehicle access to Warrington town centre will be severely restricted – road closures will be strictly enforced.
“If you are expecting a delivery you may wish to re-schedule, as access will not be granted at this time.
“Multi-storey car parks at Time Square and Golden Square will be accessible throughout the morning, though may be busier than usual due to the event and other areas being closed.
“We apologise for any inconvenience these closures may cause – they are in place for the safety of walkers and all road users.”
What will the weather be like?
It's looking like Friday will be a fine day with sunny spells according to the latest weather forecast.
Temperatures are expected to reach 20 degrees at midday before rising to 23 degrees during the afternoon so make sure you've got suncream and a hat.
Which route does the procession go?
The route has been changed in 2019 with groups this year turning left onto Sankey Street, head down Springfield Street, clockwise around Palmyra Square and onto Winmarleigh Street before linking back up with Museum Street.
