THE M6 was closed southbound between junctions 24 and 23 after a three car crash this morning, Saturday.
The closure between Ashton-in-Makerfield and Haydock Island led to congestion backing up to junction 26 at the M58 Orrell interchange.
Diversions were in place through Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan and Platt Bridge which led to roads in those areas being busy.
A spillage was cleared by highways officers after the collision the M6 and the vehicles involved in the crash were recovered.
The junction 25 slip road was closed to reduce congestion.
