A MAN who lost his dad to prostate cancer more than 20 years ago has organised a 22-mile charity walk to raise money and fight the disease.

Martin McNicholas, originally from Latchford but now living in Chester, will be tackling a gruelling walk from Chester to Warrington in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

The 55-year-old was inspired to take on the challenge after his dad died from the disease in 1998.

In the UK, one man dies from prostate cancer every 45 minutes which is more than 11,500 men a year.

Prostate Cancer UK predict that by 2030, it will be the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the country.

Martin said: "I have decided to take on the walk for Prostate Cancer UK as my motivation is to be part of something that can help change and save men’s lives.

"I am really looking forward to the walk and I’m delighted to be raising awareness and much needed funds to help beat prostate cancer.

"I have had an incredible response to the event and lots of family and friends have committed to join me on the walk – the whole event is about having fun and raising money, however given the training beforehand and completing the walk, it will also have huge health benefits for those taking part.

"It’s a win-win situation for everyone!"

As part of Martin's training schedule he is taking part in the Fit To Tackle programme run by LiveWire and The Warrington Wolves Foundation.

It is a free 12-week beginners fitness and weight loss course which is pushing him to improve his fitness levels ahead of the big day.

Gabriella Bailey, interim director of fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: "We are so grateful that Martin has decided to organise this event for Prostate Cancer UK.

"Our March for Men events have been a great success and I would encourage anyone to keep an eye out for more events coming up, or to organise their own March for Men walk like Martin and help continue raising money and awareness."
