A GROUP of school children got more than they expected when they visited Lymm’s popular Heritage Centre.

Children from the reception class at Statham Primary School walked to the village to see Lymm’s own prehistoric monster at Lymm Heritage Centre as part of their latest project on dinosaurs.

But they had an extra treat as they also got to meet the man who made the chirorotherium – to give it its proper name – Colin Grimes (pictured above) who is the ex-Head of Art at Lymm High School.

Colin and his wife Janet have recently installed a new exhibit on fustian cutting which was one of the topics for a year five group who visited the following day.

Chair of the Centre, Alan Williams, who helped with the reception class visit, said: “This week has been a perfect example of why the Heritage Centre is now so important to the village.

“As well as the school visits this week we also hosted a combined meeting and afternoon tea for Lymm and Knutsford Inner Wheel and gave a talk on Lymm’s Belgian refugees as well as our normal weekly public opening from 1pm to 5pm Thursday to Sunday.

“The new exhibit on fustian cutting has really shown the strong local family connections and we look forward to something similar when we open the gold beating exhibit in time for Lymm Festival.

“With four further days of school visits for ‘We Love Our Canal’ as part of the run up to Lymm Historic Transport Day it’s going to be all hands on deck.

“We want young people to be proud of the place where they live and this is a great way to start.”

The centre is also working with Channel 4 LegoMasters winner Steve Guinness on a project that will be unveiled shortly and that will offer the chance for local children to show off their Lego skills.

The Centre, which has received nearly 15,000 visitors since opening in June 2017, was awarded a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund, but still also relies on support from groups and individuals including building owner Howard Platt, Lymm Parish Council and the Co-op.
