SUPPLEMENTARY questions at full council meetings have been restored – one year after councillors sparked anger after removing them.

Warrington Borough Council has been under public and political pressure over the removal of the extra question since campaigner Richard Buttrey was refused an additional question last June.

Members backed amendments to the constitution, as recommended by the constitution sub-committee, during the authority’s annual meeting on Monday.

A time limit of five minutes will apply per question to cover the asking of the question and the response, as well as any supplementary question and response.

Any supplementary question will have a 30-second time limit.

The maximum number of questions that can be asked per meeting will remain at three.

Public question time at a meeting will, therefore, not exceed 15 minutes.

It has been agreed that once the councillor responsible has replied, the questioner may ask one supplementary question, which must relate to the answer provided or to the subject of the original question.

Residents have been told it should not seek to introduce new information, extend the area of the original question, be of unduly length or expressed in inappropriate terms.
