A SCHOOL pupil from Birchwood has shed his flowing locks in support of a young people’s charity.

Nathan Lovatt, who is in year seven at Birchwood High School, has not had his hair cut for over four years.

During this time, his hair has grown to over 15 inches in length.

But according to his mum, Janine, the 12-year-old had no qualms about trimming it back to raise £85 for The Little Princess Trust.

“Initially he wanted to grow his hair long as that’s the style his dad and uncle have theirs,” she said.

“Then he saw stories on TV and online showing people cutting their long hair for charity and decided it was something he would like to do.

“He looks totally different now with his shorter hair, but he said he definitely prefers it that way.”

The Little Princess Trust provide real hair wigs, free of charge to children and young people up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions.

And the 15 inches of hair collected after Nathan’s trim will go towards making one of these wigs as well as his monetary donation.

“When Nathan saw the work the charity does, he realised that the hair trimmings could be re-used and that would be like a second donation,” Janine said.

“It costs about £500 to make one of the wigs on top of the hair donated, so it was great for him to contribute some money as well.

“Becky at Extreme Cutting House in Birchwood, who cut his hair, said they were really impressed with what he was doing.

"She asked him whether he was sure he wanted to go through with it but he was determined to get it cut.

"He is very proud of what he has done, as are the whole family of him.”
