ALBION legend Peter Ward will lace up his boots and come out of retirement for a good cause.

The Seagulls may have beaten arch rivals Crystal Palace twice in the league this season, but the sides will face off one more time in a different kind of match.

The team at the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund (REMF) has been busy preparing for the 18th annual challenge match, with all the money going to charity.

A team of Albion fans and former players will take on a makeshift Crystal Palace team – also made up from fans and former players.

The REMF was set up in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in New York to honour Albion fan Robert Eaton who was one of nearly 3,000 people killed in the strikes on the World Trade Center.

Since then the charity has raised more than £100,000.

This year’s match takes place at Worthing’s Woodside Road tomorrow at 7.45pm.

Peter Ward may have scored 79 goals in his five years with Albion but he’s also netted twice in REMF games, most recently in last year’s contest.

REMF vice-chairman Brett Mendoza, who is a keen Albion fan and manager of the Albion REMF team, said the match highlights the positives of the rivalry between the Seagulls and their Croydon based rivals.

He said: “There are good people on both sides, but they aren’t the ones that normally that make headlines.

“It’s nice for the fans to come together for a good cause.

“The matches are always quite tense, they usually go to penalties.

“It’s just a bit of fun and a chance to see Albion take on Palace.”

Last year the REMF raised more than £8,000, between money raised by players and gate receipts.

All the money raised goes to the REMF and helps disadvantaged people not just in Sussex but across the world.

Earlier this year the charity donated money to Croydon FC after the non-league club was broken into.

Money raised by the REMF has also helped projects to be taken up in Africa and Australia.

This year is the first time the challenge match will take place at Woodside Road, the home of Worthing FC, and Brett thanked the team at Worthing for being part of the event.

Entry is £5 on the door, while under 16s pay £2 or get in free if with an adult.
