A GIANT wall has gone up at Victoria Park to pay tribute to a Warrington women and encourage people to take part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

The wall features the story of Grappenhall participant Sam Self, and will try to raise greater awareness towards this year’s Warrington Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events on Sunday, June 2.

Sam’s personal story displayed on the wall will mirror signs worn on their backs by participants, that represent a central part of the event.

Sam, who lost her mum and brother to cancer, said: “It’s an amazing way to raise money for a cause so close to my heart.

“Everyone’s there for the same reason – they’ve been affected in some way by cancer and there’s such a sense of camaraderie which makes it so special.

“If you haven’t already signed up and are thinking about it then go and do it.

“You’ll be doing something simply awesome for an amazing charity and Cancer Research UK can’t do it without you.”

Sam first volunteered in the Race for Life in 2001 when she ran a 5k event in Sheffield after her mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

In 2007, she participated again when her brother was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and has since then been involved in the event on an annual basis.

Sarah Hunter, Cancer Research UK’s Warrington event manager, said: “By following Sam’s lead and joining the Race for Life in Warrington, people can make a real difference.

“It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives.

However, cancer survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s, with Cancer Research UK’s work being pivotal in that progress.

The charity’s Race for Life is a series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events that raise millions of pounds to help fund vital research.

For the first time, men can also take part in the series of races during the day.
