HISTORY-lovers are being given the chance to delve into their past at an upcoming event.

Bolton Library will play host to a Local and Family History Market Place, where people can discover the stories of their local area or find out more about the lives of their relatives.

The event is to be held on Saturday, May 11, and attendees will have the opportunity to join the archivist for a tour of the treasures of the past kept in the Bolton Archive’s strongroom.

It will include a number of local history groups on hand to help visitors with advice, expertise and tales of the past.

A spokesman for the event, said: “The Market Place is there to let the customers know what’s available out there if they are interested in family history.

“We have involved all the local societies that want to participate, they are always looking for new members.”

Attendees can explore the key sites in Bolton's history, with the chance to look into important events from their area, such as the Albert Halls fire in 1981 or the historic halls of the borough, including Smithills Hall and Hall i'th' Wood.

The library building, in Le Mans Crescent, already has an extensive local history collection including lists of useful resources and tips on how to start your own historical family tree.

There is also a copy of the International Genealogical Index at the library which details many of the church and parish records taken throughout history.

The event is part of Local and Community History Month, which is organised by the Historical Association and runs throughout May and challenges people across the UK to get in touch with the history of the places they live.

The association wants everyone to research and read, share information and raise awareness about the history of their communities and local areas.

To book your free place on the tours which run at 11am, 1pm and 3pm call the History Centre on 01204 332185.
