THIS week in Yester Years we have gone back to the 1960s to remember a popular pastime.

George McKie, from Great Sankey, has sent us this picture of him and two trainspotting mates at Bank Quay around 1964/65.

The picture was taking around 7pm while waiting for a train which was on its way to Perth.

He said: “I cannot remember their names now but we met regularly on the station when you had to buy a platform ticket to get on.

“Sometimes we were thrown off not long after we got a ticket and other times we were left alone.

“The main reason to go in the evening was to see a similar class loco hauling the Half Eight Flyer (our nickname for it) that was usually hauled by another Britannia class loco which went through the station, non stop, at around 70 mph.

“It was popular to get all the numbers in the class and that was the only class left at the time with non missing.”
