Chester 3rd 41-17 Holmes Chapel
HOLMES Chapel’s season has ended with a waiting game.
A win at Chester thirds on Saturday would have seen them promoted.
But, with an injury stricken squad, it proved beyond them.
They remain in top spot but only a point ahead of Chester and five in front of Bowdon’s seconds, who both have two games in hand – the first of which is against each other this Saturday.
It was not the conclusion to the season Chapel were looking for, though it was a valiant effort against title rivals.
A young squad can be proud of both the performance and the season they have had.
Hooker Sam Cook, man of the match, epitomised the team effort.
Chester were the better team on the day – their experience and decision-making at key times was far superior to Chapel’s.
Although the game started with the visitors looking dangerous with the ball, they were not at the races defensively.
Stand-in fly-half Bob Hamilton leaving the field with a serious knee injury was a blow to add to two opening Chester tries.
However back-row forward Luke Cheetham scored Chapel’s first try of the game with a powerful finish.
Mark McEneaney then suffered a broken arm before Cheetham crossed for his second score.
The setbacks continued, Cheetham leaving the field with cramp and Jim Moss with a dislocated shoulder.
With the wind and the hill in Chester’s favour after the break the hosts pulled away.
Dyson finished a lovely break but it proved to be one last hurrah.
