A FORMER airfield site could be transformed into a luxury family home with an underground car gallery for up to 50 vehicles.

Duncan Cameron’s planning application proposing the construction of a property with the private car storage facility will come before the development management committee on Wednesday.

The site is located within the old Stretton Airfield, which straddles the local authority boundary between Warrington and Cheshire East, with the main element of the scheme falling within Warrington.

The scheme comprises the circular car storage facility and the property, which would provide accommodation over three floors with a rooftop external viewing deck.

The gallery is a double-height space and, therefore, sits partially beneath and partially above the ground.

The basement would feature a pool, gym and jacuzzi, along with a ‘sunken lounge’, storage and plant spaces – with these spaces planned to directly adjoin the car storage area and offer views to the gallery.

Vehicular access to the house would be taken from Crowley Lane, via an existing airfield taxiway to the east of the site

But Antrobus Parish Council, Stretton Parish Council and Appleton Parish Council have objected, along with five residents.

Stretton Parish Council says the scheme would demonstrate inappropriate development of green belt land.

However, High Legh Parish Council believes the development would be the ‘best use’ of the land.

The design and access statement says the primary aim is to create a home providing an attractive environment which is ‘inclusive, practical, legible and sustainable’ for the client and his family to exist and thrive.

In a planning statement, council officers said harm to the green belt needs to be ‘carefully balanced’ against the case for very special circumstances.

It added: “This is counterbalanced by a proposal which involves a creative and bespoke form of development, the design and concept of which is considered to be truly outstanding and reflects the history of this unique and vast site.”

The application has been recommended for approval subject to conditions.

As it involves the provision of floor space of more than 1000m² in the green belt, it will need to be referred to the secretary of state if passed by the committee.
