THE family of a doctor who was killed in a crash in Culcheth have paid tribute to the ‘much-loved husband and father’.

Dr Stephen Geoghegan died on Wednesday, April 3, in an accident involving two vans and a car on Common Lane.

Now the 84-year-old’s loved ones have paid tribute to the former GP, who served in the NHS in the Leigh area for four decades.

In a statement, Dr Geoghegan’s family said: “It is with great sadness that Dr Stephen Geoghegan passed away on Wednesday following a road traffic collision in Culcheth.

“Stephen was a much-loved husband and father.

“He was a GP in the Leigh area for 40 years, and was well respected within his profession.

“This tragic event will leave a huge gap in our lives, and we ask that our privacy is respected at this difficult time."

An air ambulance was called to the scene at around 4pm on the day of the accident, with police later confirming that the driver of one of the vans had died in the crash.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene, using cutting equipment to make one of the vehicles safe.

It is believed that no other parties were injured during the incident.

The road was closed between the two entrances to Twiss Green Lane for several hours before reopening at around 7.30pm.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Sadly, the driver of one of the vans - an 84-year-old local man - died at the scene.

“His next of kin has been informed and the family are being provided support by specialist officers.

“There are believed to be no other injuries and the road was reopened at 7.30pm.”
