A FIREFIGHTER is running the London Marathon to raise money to save Sumatran orangutans from extinction.

Matt Bowen, who works in Preston but is originally from Harlow Close in Thelwall, is participating in the event to help prevent widespread deforestation in Borneo – driven by growing demands for palm oil – that is leading to the rapid decline of the species.

He is running the race, which takes place on Sunday, April 28, to raise money and awareness for the Sumatran Orangutan Society, an organisation that strives to secure the future of Sumatran orangutans and their forests.

Ahead of the race, Matt said: “Whilst visiting Borneo two years ago I witnessed first hand the devastation that deforestation causes. Orangutans need these rainforests, and so do we.

“It doesn’t take much to make a difference. We can all make a change that will help.

“Stop using unsustainable palm oil, read up and educate our children, raise money and raise awareness.

“If we all do a little everyday we can all make huge changes to the world.”

It is estimated that every hour the size of 300 football fields of Asian rainforests are being destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations.

Sumatran orangutans have been one of the most significant victims of this trend, being deprived of the palm fruit that is exploited by deforestation and increasing desires for palm oil.

The species is also diminishing because of the illegal pet trade, an issue exacerbated by deforestation that leaves orangutans exposed and vulnerable to poachers.

The Sumatran Orangutan Society has a long-term vision of a viable and thriving population of orangutans living free in a protected rainforest home.

Matt, who will be running the marathon with a toy orangutan on his back and is aiming for a time under four hours, added: “Even if you cannot afford to donate, I hope you will take the time to read my story,”

“Distance does not limit our boundaries to how we can help or make a difference, even if we are on the other side of the world.”

He has currently raised £1,100, 11 per cent of his overall target of £10,000.
