RESIDENTS have been expressing their frustration at traffic using a Penketh street as a cut through and speeding cars - after one vehicle was caught doing 44mph in the 20 zone.

There have been several reports of 'near-misses' and a number of school children almost getting hit by speeding vehicles on the bend of Meeting Lane and St Mary's Road.

With a high number of cars parking along the bend, this has been causing a bottle neck at the junction.

Cllr Craig Lenihan, said: "I have met with several concerned residents of The Dale after a near miss with a child. This in addition to the near misses between speeding cars these residents see daily.

"Since that meeting I have researched options available to resolve these issues. As a result I have logged the matter with colleagues at WBC requesting urgent help.

"Some of the suggestions I have made are for improved signage; the narrowing of the junction with St Mary's Road; a traffic calming method at each end and the reinstatement of the give way and junction markings with South Dale."

PCSO Heaps set up a speed indication device on The Dale and in 72 hours, more than 600 cars exceeded the speed limit with a top speed of 44mph.

Cllr Lenighan added: "I have asked Warrington Borough Council for a number of issues to be resolved, most ideas sadly have not been approved.

"For anyone that uses The Dale as a cut through, can I just ask that you are mindful of the residents and their children who are playing out in the street.

"The road is 20mph and is not designed for the traffic it faces daily."

In response to Cllr Lenihan's requests, the council agreed it would be beneficial to paint give way markings on the South Dale approach to the junction.

He is also in discussions with police regarding cars driving over the pavements at St Marys Road and Meeting Lane.
