A 100-YEAR-old woman's wish was granted by care home staff as they took her back to the school where she once studied and taught.

Edith Fildes, who has been a resident at Widnes Hall Care Home for the past six years, has lived in the town all of her life.

The care home has a wish tree in its reception for residents, and the staff try to grant as many as they can.

Former teacher Edith wanted nothing more than to return to Wade Deacon High School where she was a student in the 1930s and later became an English teacher in the 1950s.

Angie Taker, activities champion at the care home, said Edith has never lost her love of English literature.

She said: "She used to hold a book club and residents would come to her room and read.

"Now the staff read to her- she loves poetry."

Angie contacted Edith's old school and the staff were thrilled to open their doors to their former pupil and teacher.

She explained: "All of the teachers came out to see her last week.

"Some of the teachers even remembered being taught by her."

Edith visited the school library and the drama studio, as she played a vital role in some of the school performances during her time there.

Then, she got to watch a modern-day English lesson taking place.

Edith has become something of a celebrity after her special wish attracted the attention of ITV Granada Reports.

Angie said: "She was made up to see herself on TV!"

Angie and the rest of the staff at Widnes Hall Care Home are busy granting more wishes.

Some of these include a trip to Spain and to sit on a motorbike again.
