On a night of high drama in Parliament, the vote was won by 321 votes to 278, majority 43. This despite the Government making a last minute switching and asking Conservative MPs to vote against the motion.
MPs are set to vote again tonight on whether article 50 - which dictates that the UK must leave the EU on March 29 - should be extended.
All members of the EU must agree to that though before an extension can be agreed.
