BARCLAYS plans to close its Stockton Heath branch in June – leaving just one remaining bank open in the village.

The banking giant says it will close the unit on Walton Road on June 14.

A Barclays spokesman said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices.

"At Barclays Stockton Heath branch, customer usage has continued to decline in recent years and 40 per cent of our customers now regularly use alternative branches, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close it on Friday, June 14.

"We hope that the availability of our Warrington branch and access to services at the local Post Office located at 49 Walton Road, Stockton Heath along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.”

The ATM will also be removed as part of the work.

The spokesman added: "Due to the proximity of other free to use ATMs, there are no plans to leave behind a Barclays ATM in Stockton Heath."

Natwest is now the only bank open in Stockton Heath.

Lloyds turned into the Olive Tree Greek restaurant last year while HSBC closed its branch in 2016 – it later reopened as Zalo's cafe.
