THE man who discovered Oasis will be visiting Warrington to share his many stories behind the scenes of the music business.

Music mogul Alan McGee will be giving an intimate talk at the Pyramid about his colourful and varied career on May 10.

The 58-year-old is best known for signing Oasis to the independent label, Creation Records, which he co-founded.

But over the years the Scottish businessman and music industry executive has been a record label owner, musician, manager and music blogger for The Guardian.

In that time Alan has worked with and championed the likes of Primal Scream, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and The Libertines.

Alan's love of music goes right back to his youth. He grew up in Glasgow and attended King's Park Secondary School, where he met future Primal Scream founder Bobby Gillespie

They bonded over punk rock and were once in a band together called called The Drains. Alan later moved to London and by 1983 he had co-founded Creation Records which became one of the key labels in the mid-80s indie movement.

He welcomed back Bobby Gillespie and his band Primal Scream back into the fold and managed The Jesus and Mary Chain, bringing them from obscurity to stardom.

But Creation's true heyday came when Alan signed Oasis. The label released the band's first three hugely successful albums and the exposure turned him into an icon.

He was awarded the NME 'Godlike Genius' prize in 1996.

On the night, hosted by author and broadcaster Ron Fiddaman, music fans will also have the opportunity to ask Alan questions about his life and career.

An Evening with Alan McGee takes place at the Pyramid on May 10. Tickets are £15. Call 442345 or visit pyramid.culturewarrington.org
