RINGWAY Golf Club has three active members who have all been Cheshire presidents – a feat few clubs regionally and nationally can match.

As well as serving their club and county for many years, the trio of Steven Buckley, Roger Fielding and Ron Harrison have also been actively involved in golf at regional and national level.

Buckley was Cheshire president in 2002 and also served England for 10 years with the EGU before it became England Golf.

He served on the Standard Scratch Score (SSS) and Handicapping Committee during that time and as the chairman for the last five years.

Fielding was the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs (CUGC) president in 2011 and then went on to be chairman of the EG Northern Counties from 2014 to 2016.

The pair were also captains of Ringway but when Harrison served as the CUGC president in 2013, he was a member of Romiley Golf Club before joining Ringway.

He enjoyed a great playing career, being a Cheshire Junior and Senior champion as well as playing many times for the county teams.

He has been active in junior development in the county and along with Cheshire coach Peter Barber (Didsbury GC) is now looking after the England Under-18 boys in the North West.

Another county plus for Ringway is that current president, Judith Wainwright, has served as the president for the Cheshire Ladies GA for the past two years.

Another Ringway star who has made his mark recently is Olympic hockey team gold medallist Martyn Grimley, who qualified as a senior last year and showed his talent as he won the Cheshire Senior Strokeplay Championship at Bromborough.

He has also played for the Cheshire Senior team in a successful first season at their level.

Grimley won the Gordon Edwards Memorial Tournament at Bromborough and also achieved the long-time ambition of a scratch handicap playing in the EG County Champions competition at Woodhall Spa in September.
