WORK to create a new zebra crossing in Orford is set to begin next week.

The crossing will be installed on Orford Green near to Hilden Island, with work set to begin on Monday, February 18.

Roadworks will take around six weeks to complete, with resurfacing also planned as part of the scheme.

Ward councillor Morgan Tarr has welcomed the improvements to road safety in the area.

Cllr Tarr said: "I was very pleased to receive news from the council that work will begin shortly on a zebra crossing on Orford Green.

"I had received a number of comments from residents who use the Tesco Express on Orford Green and who were having trouble crossing the road, especially at busy times of the day - I have no doubt that they will be very happy with this news.

"I have also been informed that part of the road is due to be resurfaced in this area as well, which is certainly extremely welcome.

"Sadly, there are quite a number of roads throughout Orford which have fallen into a very poor state and are in urgent need of repair.

"I have and will continue to raise these concerns with the council and I am optimistic that we can address some of the worst roads in the area.

"The investment in this scheme - along with the proposed traffic calming measures on and around Smith Drive, which are due to take place later this year - shows that the council is taking traffic issues in Orford seriously, and I am looking forward to working with them in future to develop further schemes in other parts of the ward."
