POLICE investigating a report that a woman attempted to persuade a young schoolgirl to get into her car in Lymm have confirmed that it was an 'innocent mistake'.

A police probe was launched on Tuesday after a 12-year-old was walking home on Booths Lane at around 3.50pm when a driver pulled up alongside her and asked her if she wanted a lift.

The schoolgirl refused to get into the car.

It was alleged the car followed her for a short time along the road before driving off.

But police believe the driver in question has since come forward.

A force spokesman said: “Further to the incident on Booths Lane, we have received a call from a member of the public who has said that it was them who stopped and spoke to this girl.

“She thought it was a neighbour’s daughter and was offering her a lift home due to the bad weather.

“We still have to confirm this but it is looking like an innocent mistake by the driver.

“We will update further as soon as we have clarified the details.”

PCSO Daren Dennis spoke to the driver of the car involved in the incident on Booths Lane today, Friday.

The spokesman added: "We can confirm that it was a case of mistaken identity by the driver and we can confirm it was an innocent mistake. All parties have been updated."
