HE'S been behind the camera for the past 12 months, now documentary marker John Smail is appearing in front of the lens.

The journalist behind the Selkirk documentary A Souter’s Year found himself in the television spotlight last week, when his DVD project was featured in ITV Border’s ‘Lookaround’ news programme.

Former editor John Smail travelled to ITV’s Gateshead studios, where he was interviewed by presenters Pam Royle and Ian Payne.

Amongst other things they asked him the reasons behind embarking on the 12-month venture, as well as wanting to know his own personal highlights.

Several video clips from the documentary were shown, including the Great Selkirk Haggis Hunt, Standard Bearer Peter Forrest casting his colours on Common Riding day, as well as interview with Ettrick Forest Archers’ first lady chairperson Jackie Hale.

John told us: "The reaction to the programme has been very positive, and it’s pleasing to see how much interest the documentary has generated in the local community since it went on sale to the public.”

The four-DVD box set A Souter’s Year retails at £17.50, with proceeds from sales being donated to local charities and organisations.

Copies of A Souter’s Year can be purchased at either the Scott’s Selkirk Shop in Selkirk Market Place, or at Turnbull’s Shoe Repairs on the town’s High Street.

It can also be bought on-line via the “A Souter’s Year” web site at https://www.asoutersyear.com
