BOTH of Warrington’s MPs voted against Theresa May’s Brexit deal as she suffered a crushing defeat on Tuesday.

In the biggest defeat for a sitting Government in history, the Prime Minister’s deal was rejected by 230 votes.

The Tory Government is now set to face a vote of no confidence – with Labour hoping to trigger an early general election.

Labour’s Warrington North MP Helen Jones said she ‘simply could not support’ the deal.

She added: “When I voted to trigger Article 50, it was to respect the result of the referendum.

“However, the deal that Theresa May put to Parliament would fail to protect the jobs and living standards of my constituents in Warrington North.”

Labour’s Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid also condemned the Prime Minister’s proposal.

Shortly ahead of the vote, he said: “It is clear that people from across Warrington South are deeply divided on what our future partnership with the EU should look like.

“The Prime Minister has completely lost her grip on this issue.

“I do not believe this deal is in the national interest and, therefore, I have no option but to vote against the Prime Minister’s deal this evening.

“Voting against the Prime Minister’s deal does not mean voting against Brexit.”

In October, Warrington’s borough councillors backed a motion calling on the council to support the need for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.

The motion, proposed by Cllr Dan Price, executive board member for culture and partnerships, asserted that Warrington residents never voted to be ‘worse off’.

Cllr Price (LAB – Great Sankey North and Whittle Hall) praised Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for moving the vote of no confidence.

He added: “But as both the DUP and prominent Tory Brexiteers like Boris have already come out in favour of the PM, I’m sure May will survive and continue to ignore Parliament – our elected representatives.

“While the Conservative Government created the mess our country currently finds itself in, I’m convinced that Labour, with the other opposition parties, can collectively lead the nation out of it.

“Only a People’s Vote – between no-deal Brexit or Remain – will resolve this matter and allow the country to move forward.”
