SPARKS are set to fly at Orford Jubilee Hub next month as its library becomes one of the first in the country to host a romantic speed dating event.

Wendy Molyneux, LiveWire’s strategic library manager, and her team of community librarians are delivering the Valentine’s session for over 30s who may find online dating intimidating.

Wendy believes the Orford Hub will be breaking new ground by hosing the speed dating night after discussing plans with library co-ordinators.

A dating agency have advised the team on how to run the night to maximise the chances of success and ensure the evening runs smoothly.

The event will be free to attend and the team want to create a relaxed environment for the participants

To give it a coffee shop feel, the library has invited Amber Coffee Roasters to take part and cakes will be on sale to provide an authentic date experience.

Wendy said: “One of the reasons we are hosting the event is to highlight that libraries are not boring places – they can host exciting socials and be places to meet people.

“But more importantly this is a way to combat social isolation, a lot of people whether young or old can experience it.

“The night is way to get to know people. Online dating isn’t for everyone and people might not have the money to spend at a bar or restaurant.

“Libraries are safe places where everyone can come to and feel at ease.

“If it is successful we might look to host it at various libraries across town.”

Wendy added: “By doing a bit of research we’ve found that speed dating at libraries has worked in America, particularly in Omaha, Nebraska where speed dating in the library has led to three marriages and two babies.

“That said, because it is all so new to us we are keeping an open mind and thinking that if nothing else people might find some new friends.”

The event takes place on Wednesday, February 13 at 7pm and is free to attend.

You can sign up by ringing any LiveWire library. When people register, they will be asked their age bracket.
