WARRINGTON Voluntary Action is celebrating 20 years of its volunteering centre by creating a giant timeline of the town's selfless efforts.

On Wednesday, December 5 a huge roll of paper was stretched down the main hall in The Gateway to make a timeline of all the activities that have played a part in where the volunteering sector is today.

The team at Warrington Voluntary Action decided to start asking organisations to bring in memorabilia, pictures and information which will all be added into one larger visual timeline.

Alison Cullen, chief officer at Warrington Voluntary Action, said: "We wanted to create something which showcased the whole of Warrington's community voluntary sector together and how long that has been going on.

"It starts from 1750 with Warrington Academy and the Literary and Philosophical Society, but then it jumps to the 1900s leading up to 2020.

"Groups have come to us and written down when they started and what happened as a result, with some key activities highlighting what they have achieved."

The team is going to be piecing together the timeline throughout the year, gathering as much information from community groups as possible, including 'friends of' groups and societies which are volunteer-led.

It will then be made into a permanent display in The Gateway with pictures which the group hopes can then be taken to the museum or Golden Square.

Alison added: "We have got around 1300 voluntary organisations in Warrington and about 30 have come down already to write down information and pictures.

"It is a real starting point and we would love more to get involved to showcase the breadth of the town's voluntary sector.

"There are some interesting points highlighting when Warrington's mental health hospitals closed down and new charities were set up for the patients and when Warrington became part of Cheshire.

"What we need now is more groups to get involved and write down their contribution on the timeline.

"The finished result will look really great."
